The second annual Ralph Lowell Lecture will feature Marty Baron, former editor of The Washington Post and The Boston Globe, for a conversation about the enduring challenges to the First Amendment protections of freedom of expression and freedom of the press. Baron will examine the tension between presidential power and the First Amendment and what this means for the future of journalism, democracy, and public discourse.
With growing mistrust of the news media, including restrictions on journalists’ access to the White House press room by the president, along with the rise of AI and the spread of disinformation, the mechanisms that create and share news and information and its consumption are rapidly changing. Drawing on decades of leadership of two of the nation’s most prominent newsrooms, Baron will speak to the escalating conflict between the executive branch and the media and its implications for free speech and the indispensable role of a free press in safeguarding democracy.
